I call my painting style the "Zafer style"—a Mauritian Creole word used for something undefined. It reflects an unclassifiable, highly stylised, and surreal approach to art.

Road to Port-Sud-Est is an original Zafer painting by Mauritian artist Pascal Lagesse. A patterned pink bus winds along a coastal road toward the remote lagoon of Port-Sud-Est in Rodrigues, while a cow grazes peacefully beneath a magnificent square-leafed tree in the foreground. Small islands dot the turquoise bay beyond, and dramatic swirling clouds fill the sky above. Unhurried, luminous, and deeply rooted in the quiet beauty of island life far from the beaten path.
