I’ve had the honour of becoming an ambassador for the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower ; an international initiative that raises awareness and support for people living with non-visible disabilities. These include mental health conditions, chronic pain, neurodivergence, and other challenges that aren’t immediately visible.
Mrs. Marie-Laure Ziss-Phokeer, manager of Small Step Matters (smallstepmatters.org), recommended me to Mrs. Nadjah Abbasakoor, the official representative of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower movement in Mauritius. Mrs. Abbasakoor leads The Inclusion Station, a multidisciplinary private centre offering intervention and therapy services for families and children.
The Hidden Disabilities Sunflower movement resonates with me on a profound level. It reflects not only my own lived experience but also the emotional core of my artistic practice. The emotional aspect of my work is to convey happiness through a vibrant palette and expressive forms, while the utopian quality reflects an ideal world, untouched by the harshness of reality.
I believe in the power of vulnerability and storytelling. Through my paintings and public engagement, I aim to foster empathy, open minds, and encourage more inclusive ways of seeing. By sharing my journey, I hope to help others feel recognised and contribute to a world grounded in kindness and understanding.
